Has anybody ever had their van damaged whilst parked on a camping pitch? I'm thinking of deleting this add on and saving some money, In 20 years we have never had an incident, have I been lucky?

In 20+ years of trailer tent and caravan insurance no incidents. But is it worth the risk of deleting the add on. It is the one time when the van is most subject to the close proximity of slow moving vehicles reversing blind, tired drivers after a 300 mile trip at there least alert.
I'm only paying £200 for £31.5K of total insurance with a £100 excess. I don't think you would save yourself much.

Hi Colin, could I ask who your insurer is, mine want £324!

I renewed with Lifesure in March. It is also worth looking at Grove & Dean who are underwritten by Aviva and I have used them in the past but I believe they are one of the growing number who may require CRiS registration. Ripe are competitive.
£324 may not be as bad as you think. I was still be quoted £700 by the Caravan & Motorhome Club.

Well this year (July 2024) with Coast Insurance:

Caravan £11000 Motor Movers £1500
Contents & Personal Effects £800 Awnings £0
Public Liability £2 Million

Grand Total Including £23 admin was £184.77

Have never had to claim.

Previous years with Coast:

19 July 2017  £112.05  £20.00  £132.05
19 July 2018  £112.05  £20.00  £132.05
19 July 2019  £112.05  £20.00  £132.05
19 July 2020  £122.05  £20.00  £145.26
19 July 2021  £126.30  £20.00  £146.30
19 July 2022  £126.34  £20.00  £146.34
19 July 2023  £161.84  £23.00  £184.84

Insurance and cover is always a personal risk assessment.  You could over the years pay enough insurance to buy another caravan from new *if* you have had no claims.

I tend to hedge my bets by getting hopefully good insurance at a price I consider to be acceptable and fairly stable over several years.  I don't tend to switch and jump ship till there is a marked difference and lack of sensible price continuity.

Often missed is third party/public liability cover.  If you caravan was to catch file and damage other parties on site then you are liable.  Likewise if say unhitch and have forgotten to set the handbrake and the whole rig runs away causing damage and/or injury to other persons.  I think the third party/public liability far out weighs the loss of you own van costing £20K+.

You could investigate 3rd party / public liability only.
